Little Blog on the Prairie

“This was the fashion in 1890,” she said. “A girl your age would already be starting to feel like a young lady, and I was careful to pick styles for you that are more sophisticated than what the little girls are wearing.”

As I was strapping on some boots with twenty different hooks you had to wrap the laces around, and Betsy was showing my mom the clothes she’d laid out for her, I asked, “So is that the year you’re pretending it is now? 1890?”

“Oh, no,” said Betsy. “1890 is the year it is.”

Reviews:

“I totally want to do a book club discussion of this someday, to talk about the good and bad aspects of life on the frontier. I would absolutely recommend this.”

“A comic look at modern technology dependence, especially among teens.”

“This fast read is humorous and insightful, with realistic characters that are refreshingly well rounded. Bell has captured a 13-year-old’s voice, making Gen’s unlikely situation feel very real.”
––School Library Journal

“A fun premise that leaves Bell ample room for physical comedy, while touching on themes of family and the (dis)advantages of modern life”
––Publisher’s Weekly

“This book is hilarious and heart warming at the same time. “

“In addition to lacing the book with plenty of humor, Bell also demonstrates in her book some of the real rigors of frontier life.”
